Caskets on Broadway

Image
No not really, but they do look like caskets. All lined up just waiting to be occupied. As you can see, they are really benches for anyone interested in watching the show taking place on the stage.

Mobile Advertising

Image
Ok,the yellow hotrod was not the last car of the summer, this one is. As you can see, it is a rolling advertisement for Ride on Bikes. This bike shop is really doing well, even in this economy or maybe because of it. The prices on the bikes are considerably higher than wally world, but they are really nice.

Converted Mill Condos

Image
Across from the Ledger-Enquirer building is the River Mill condoes. The renovation of the mill building was finished maybe six or eight months ago. I quess you would say this is the 'back' of the building because the 'front' of the building faces the river. I have shots of the condos here and here and here. You can also see them in my current banner photo.

Come Back to the Five and Dime

Image
In the 1100 block of Broadway, the H.L.Green drug store no longer sells penny candy, nylons, or aspirin. I am not sure exactly when the store closed, but a couple of deli's have recently occupied the ground floor. Neither one did too well or lasted too long. The ground floor is still available for retail space, while the 2nd and 3rd floors and been converted into condos.

Ledger-Enquirer

Image
This is the home of the local newspaper. The Ledger and the Enquirer began as individual papers in the 1880's. The two papers became one in the 1930's, about the same time this building was contructed.

Too late . . .

Image
. . . to save the blue doors. As I drove to work today I passed a bulldozer and dump truck in place of the old Standard Oil and Produce building on Hwy 80. I argued with myself about going back to see if they salvaged the doors. I would have paid. I was a 1/2 mile up the road before I finally tuned around. Sadly, those doors were probably the first thing to go. The young man in charge of the destruction told me they were gone. Did he not realize those doors had value? That they were worthy of being saved? I guess not. Strange how things happen. One day last week I had a premonition that I needed to get those doors. I wish I had followed my instincts. Those doors would have made a great desk top or table. Today, this is all that's left.

Doing our part . . .

Image
. . . to reduce our carbon footprint. We live in the 'county'. We have to take our trash to the trash compactor every few days and we have to take our recycling to Columbus. This was our first trip to the new drop off point. Those blue bins really brighten the blue of the sky.

Yellow Hotrod

Last car of the summer.

Another Fountain

Image
This is one of the original fountains on Broadway. It has been restored and the newer fountains look similar. The water is a bit green though. I hope it's from the reflection of the leaves.

On Broadway (2)

Image
Another example of one of the buildings on the 1300 block of Broadway in Columbus. If the pickups were olders models I would like this shot even better.

The Big Move

Image
We recently had to have some repair work done to our septic system. But before that work could start, we had to move this tree and take down this fence . . .Now August in Alabama is probably not the best time of year to move a tree that is well established, but we didn't have a choice. To reduce the stress, we pruned it . . . I know if looks pretty rough, but from what I hear it is almost impossible to kill crepe myrtle trees. We'll see. The gentleman that was doing the work for us said he would move the tree. Obviously too heavy for the old man and me to move . . .He picked it up in the bucket and took it to its new home. Previously, we had a bradford pear in this spot, but we lost it in high winds last year . . . Keep your fingers crossed. I really hope to have a nice bloom next year.

Do You Want Butter on That

Image
We went to the movies last weekend and I was surprised to see that you could purchase personal size popcorn salt. What will they think of next?

St. Georges Anglican Church

Image
I was on the 400 block of broadway and came across this church. I like the weathered look of the siding and the bright red door.

Bradley Theatre

Image
The Bradley Theatre is located in the Historic Uptown Columbus Landmark District. The Bradley Theatre was opened to the public by Paramount Pictures on July 2, 1940. Named after the founder of the Columbus-based W. C. Bradley Co., the theatre was designed in the grand tradition of the Golden Age of motion pictures utilizing neo classical and art deco architecture. The theatre possesses one of the most impressive stages and proscenium arches in the country. Currently, the theatre hosts concerts, theatre, corporate functions and a variety of special events. Tours by appointment only. If you are interested in reading about efforts to save the theatre, check out this link.

It's Raining Outside

Image
I am considering joining the HDR revolution. I down-loaded Photomatix and have been playing around with it. I haven't paid for my license yet so if you look really closely you can see the watermark for the application (placed on tone-mapped photos). I really like the effect. The question is do I like it enough to pay for it? The following shot is the same photo using photo compression. For some reason they don't watermark these. Go figure. I like both shots, but I really like the surreal effect of the first shot.

On Broadway

Image
I made myself leave my desk for lunch today. My mission, take photos of interesting architecture on Broadway in Columbus. I parked on the 1200 block and got busy. Columbus is known as the 'fountain city'. I am not sure how many fountains there are, but they are found in the historic neighborhoods around town. In the years I've lived here some of the older, historic fountain have been stolen. How do you steal a fountain? This fountain and several others like it can be found in the median on Broadway along with live oak and magnolia trees. They were added with a street-scaping project a couple of years ago.

Rainbow in the Neighborhood

Put a little rainbow in your life.

Another Shot of the Bibb City Water Tower

Image
This part of the mill was spared from the fire. This part of the building contains the River Mill event center. Included is a restaurant and an art gallery. I have never been here for an event or to the gallery. It seemed pretty busy the day I was out taking photos.

If you are interested in some of the history of Bibb City Mill, click this link. Other Bibb City posts are here and here and here and here and here and here.

So This is What a Leech Field Looks Like

Image
This is the mess that my front yard was yesterday. The trench has been filled. Now we just need to get some straw and grass seed and we are ready to go.

PC Trouble

Image
I tell you what, when the PC starts to act up it really puts my nose out of joint. This is a 2-weeks old notebook and all of a sudden the usb port is not reading my external drive...where 99% of my photos are stored. I tell you what, I am scraping the bottom of the barrel here trying to find something of interest. It has been too hot to shoot anything.I do like this effect of this shot though. This young man was so intense. You could tell he was really into his music. He and his band put on a pretty good show. The band was the Marshall Ruffin Trio and they played blue grass and country rock.

Night at the Movies

Image
(1) Supplies: popcorn and soda
(2) Attire: PJ's
(3) Accessories: Pillows and blankets Instructions: Load up the car on a warm summer night. Upon arrival hang the speaker from your window. Watch the corny cartoon advertisement for the snack bar set to the tune of "Lady of Spain" Foot fight with your brother in the back seat. Trip to the drive-in = $10, Nostalgia = Priceless* Unfortunately, Field of Screens has gone out of business. Although, you can rent the drive-in for work functions and other special occasions.

Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department Firehouse

Image
As you can see, these guys have been out on a lot of calls (this photo was taken on July 31), and they do it for free. These guys (and gals) all have 'real' jobs. I have never had to call them to my house and I hope I never have to, but I am glad they are ready and willing to do what they can to take care of out community.

This is Goldie

Image
I know she is not gold, but her eyes are. She is one of three cats that live with us. She was born in this house and has never lived anywhere else. Her mother, Magic, was a stray that moved in one day, had a litter of kittens and moved out a couple of years later. She occasionally comes back for a visit, but she is very happy in her new home. She is very fat. Goldie on the other hand is quite slim and muscular. She is a good hunter, although I am not pleased by her skill in that area. During the summer months she spends most of her time outdoors taking care of the rodent population. During the winter she comes inside and hunkers down. She is getting old too. She is a great cat. I don't know what I like about this photo, but I do like it.

Another Surprise in the Garden

Image
This flower bloomed for the first time this year. It's been growing in the plot for a couple of years, but I had no idea what it was. I was pleasantly surprised.

Diggin Thru the Archives

Image
This is the top of an open air stage in the town square of Canos, Costa Rica. We stopped to take some photos of the mosaic-decorated church. You can see the clock tower in the background. I know this does not represent Phenix City, but it does represent the PC blogger...me.

The Red Station Wagon

Image
I'm not a gear head, but I really like the cars I occasinally come across when I'm out prowling around. As soon as I stopped to take a few shots of the wagon the seller came out to talk with me. I am not good about asking names, but he really wanted to sell. He was asking $12,500. Too rich for my blood.

Sisters

Image
I snapped these pretty little girls when I went to the Marshall Tucker Band show. They were so cute and full of personality, especially the younger one. I used photoshop to 'posterize' the photo.

Garage Fountain

Image
One day last week we had a deluge that lasted for about 20 minutes. The drains in the parking garage could not handle the volume of water coming from the upper levels, hence the mini-fountain.

How Do You Know When Watermelons are Ripe?

Image
Apparently, even the experts don't know. This is what the farmer's almanac says.Next question: Where do the seeds for seedless watermelon come from? And the final question:How much water is too much?
