Blackberry Preserves

We moved to Alabama 20 years ago and we were lucky to rent this great house. It had a private lake, access to hunting on 200 acres, and a garden full of blackberry bushes. We were thrilled about the berries. Now, I had never gardened and was not familiar with canning preserves, but this first year I was determined to make some jam. We purchased the jars and other supplies. We picked the berries and got busy in the kitchen. Making jam can be tricky for the inexperienced. Let me just say that this first attempt filled the cupboard with syrup, delicious on pancakes and ice cream, but never saw a slice of bread.
We were more successful with our second attempt with some yellow plum jam.

Love blackberries. Glad you persevered. When will these ripen?

I've never even had preserved blackberries, much less seen or tasted fresh ones.

Will you be trying again this year?

Your photo of these green ones is gorgeous, by the way.
