SOA Watch

*****
Somewhere along 1st Avenue.
SOA Watch is a protest that occurs at Fort Benning each November over the Thanksgiving weekend. Their purpose is to protest the deaths of non-combatants in Latin American countries in the 1970's and 1980's. It is their belief the the soldiers who killed these civilian were trained at the School of the Americas. The name of the school was changed in the early 1990's to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Members of the group put chalk outlines of the murdered civilians on the sidewalks of Columbus.
This one represents Ruperto Chicas, age 40. The entire list consists of almost 800 names.
Actors Martin Sheen and Susan Sarandon have participated in protests for the organization.

What happened was quite atrocious. This is another way to remember and hope it doesn't happen again.

I had not heard of this protest, but I don't think there is any question that many nasties from south of us were trained here...

A dramatic, and non-violent way to make a protest, though.

We have several people from Duluth Minnesota who participate in this. There is also a college student who attended a small private school on the south shore of Lake Superior, Northland College, who has served time in prison for her protest actions. Oh, in looking this up, there are more people that from Duluth that have served time in prison for protesting the SOA. Joel Kilgour is one of them. Quite a few people from the Twin Cites (Minneapolis/St. Paul) have also served time in prison. You are not allowed to protest too close to the training camp.
