Main Entrance of St. Mary's Hospital

Image
***** The Sisters of St Francis and Mother Alfred began saving the estimated $40,000 construction costs. Construction began on the original hospital in 1888. The hospital was scheduled to open October 1, 1889, but they opened a day early, September 30, 1889, when Dr. Will [Mayo} assisted by Dr. Charlie [Mayo] successfully removed a cancerous growth from a patient's eye.  *****

Mountain Laurel

Image
***** I really like these delicate little flowers that grow on an evergreen shrub. They are used as ornamentals and tolerant of shade and fire. Older specimens have been reported with up to 100 growth rings.  *****

Cahaba Lily (aka Shoal Water Lily)

Image
***** Cahaba Lily (aka Shoal Water Lily) Harris County, GA. Rare and threatened. Each year this private property is opened to the public to come in and see the lilies; typically for three weekends. The lilies are not on the endangered species list yet, but they are endangered. Once common throughout the southeast, today only about fifty colonies survive in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. They require a strict habitat and are difficult to transplant.  ***** The habitat for the lilies must be well-lit rocky shoals of streams and rivers. Other requirements are swift-moving, well-oxygenated water free of pollution and sediments. The primary pollinator of the lily is a nighttime visitor known as the plebian sphinx moth. The moth is attracted to the lily by the fragrance of the flower and the sugary reward it offers. Once seeds are produced, they drop into the water and sink to the bottom where they are wedged into rock and grow to become new plants. *****

O'Hare International Airport, Chicago

***** While waiting for our flight to Rochester; this guy just caught my eye. Taking advantage of the outlet to charge at least two devices. He looks like he could use that vacation at the Broadmoor being advertised in the billboard.  *****

The Restaurant

Image
***** We did not eat at this restaurant, but I like the look of the building, especially the scrollwork. 2nd Street, Rochester, MN *****

Dalai Lama

I am still in Rochesterr, MN, but so is the Dalai Lama. He is here for his annual checkup and a speaking engagement. I was able to capture some shots of him, but cannot figure out hoops to publish photos using the iPad. If you are on Facebook you can click my badge. This is so frustrating...

In Rochester, MN

I am posting photos on Facebook if you want to check them out. I am so climatically spoiled...it's cold up here! Click my Facebook badge in the left column.

RW (Riverwalk) Closed

Image
***** Well, it appears that phase II, or is it phase III of the river restorations is about to begin. They will be closing off this section of the riverwalk in order to start the de-construction of the City Mills Dam. An encampment of homeless people on the river bank had to move behind the line. This is the portion of the riverwalk I use most frequently, so I am going to have to alter my route for the duration. ***** I will be out of town for the next week. See you when I gt back.  *****

Bench of Convenience

Image
***** On the Alabama side of the Chattahoochee river. Most of the lumber used in the construction of the dam   130 years ago will be reclaimed. The wood is heart pine, very hard, and nearly indestructible. Unfortunately, trash in the area is increasing along with the pedestrian traffic. I do not understand why people cannot haul the trash back up the hill that they carried down. *****

Memory Bomb

Image
***** Of the new pieces on Broadway, this has got to be my favorite. Why, you as? Because it's a music box : ) ***** *****  The key is inside the rings on the left of the top shot. We were grinning like fools after finding and winding the key.

Market Days

Image
***** Market Days kicked off in Uptown Columbus yesterday to a good crowd. You can purchase everything from arts and crafts to locally-grown organic vegetables. I got there late and missed out on the fresh tomatoes. I did get a nice batch of strawberries though : ) *****

Reclining Form, Steel and Wood

Image
***** I am glad that they are finally identifying the rotating sculptures on Broadway in Columbus. I have driven by this on a couple of occasions and was not impressed. I like it much better up close and personal.  *****

***** The local TV media at the ground-breaking ceremony for a Troy State University river-front campus. I am reserving judgement right now on the location, even though I matriculated from this school.   *****

Curb Service

Image
***** Was it common back in the day to find gas pumps located close to the street like this? These pumps are part of a garage that is to the right of the shot. No mini mart inside. Just auto repairs and gas pumps. *****
