Chattahoochee Brewing Company

Image
***** New micro-brewery-restaurant in Phenix City close to the river. I am sure they are counting on all the deluge of kayakers and rafters when the river restoration project is complete. During a recent council meeting, licenses were approved for liquor and dancing to a jukebox (which I found very interesting). I didn't know you had to have a license to dance to a jukebox. Learn something new every day.  *****

Looking for Stocking Stuffers

Image
I went to the local Target store to purchase some goodies for some soldiers we are sponsoring in Afghanistan. I also ended purchasing some items for my family.

A Bit of Color ...

Image
... after yesterday's gray and gloom. I found these twin Ronald McDonald 'sculptures' at a local antique and thrift mall. A little creepy actually.

Black and White

Image
And sometimes gray. Seen today at a local strip mall.

Black Lantern with Red Begonias

Image
Columbus is called the Fountain City. I was pleasantly surprised to find this lantern and begonias over near Lakebottom Park. You can see a bit of a fountain in the background.

A&K Thrift Mall

Image
This Food Maxx grocery store has been sitting empty for at least 10 years. Earlier this year, it was given a second chance as a thrift mall. A pretty good idea I think. I have shopped there myself on several occasions. You can find collectibles, decorative arts, furniture, and they also have a snack bar. Spaces rent for between 50$ to about 250$. Each time I go, more of the spaces are occupied by entrepreneurs.

I am just glad that someone finally found a use for this space. Based on the number of cars I see in the parking lot, I am not the only one who thinks this is a good idea.

Another View of the Bridge

Image
And to follow up from yesterday's comments. The bridge work is finished, but the work connecting the river walk and a plaza on the Columbus side is yet to be finished. That work is scheduled to start this month and opened to the public next spring.

14th Street Bridge

Image
The bridge appears to be finished, but they have yet to open it to the public. I wish they would hurry. I did hear that there was a structural problem (while I was on vacation), but I have not had the time to confirm the information.

In the Hood

Spotted during our after dinner stroll. Happy Thanksgiving.

The Channel is Complete

Image
Part of the river restoration project was to preserve the Blue Heron rookery on Bird Island. This work appears to be mostly complete. I think they did a good job. What say you?

The natural flow in the river at this point was to the west; toward Alabama. During low flow periods the roots to the trees were exposed and and the tree was leaning dangerously. The birds were disturbed for a few months with the noise of heavy equipment and daily blasting to break up the rock. I hope they haven't been too traumatized.

A Boat Full of Murano Glass at the Columbus Museum

Image
This is a full-size row boat and as you can it is full to overflowing.

Afternoon Snack

Image
Raw armadillo. This is not the best shot, taken from my office window, but we don't see many bald eagles around my neighborhood. News spread fast and he put on quite a show for us.

Scramble dog at Dinglewood Pharmacy

Image
We had a team activity day for work and we went to Lieutenant's Diner for lunch. They have been around since 1918 and are well known for their scramble dogs. I have lived here for over 20 years and had one so I ordered one up today...with a cherry vanilla coke.
