Something Smells Fishy

Image
This fountain is at the intersection of Wynnton and Buena Vista roads in the Dinglewood Historic District. One of the nicest of the 'vintage' fountains in Columbus, the Sarling Fountain was given to the city of Columbus in 1929 as a memorial to Lenora Sarling. The fountain is made of Carrara marble.

Spring Wedding Show @ the Rivermill

Image
My friend Christine at the wedding show. She will be getting hitched on July 20th and we went to get some ideas for her upcoming nuptials. It was fun to go and get ideas to make her day special. I add this little collage using an app that I found called Magic Collage.

Anyone Here?

Image
As a rule, I do not eat KFC, but because I went to the wedding show yesterday Tom talked me into bringing some home; he likes it. He worked there back in the day. My mother worked there for a number of years too when my brother and I were in grade school. Needless to say, I have eaten my share of fried chicken over the years. Most of their business was coming thru the drive thru; I prefer to go inside so I can see how clean it is :)

Blue Sky in Bibb City

Image
My girlfriend is getting married in July and we went to the wedding show today at the Rivermill Event Center. It is a nice venue for a wedding or reception; providing wedding planning services to catering. They have several rooms and a beautiful garden.

Panama City Beach this Morning

Image
We have had storms in the area for the last 24 hours or so so no shooting. I am not at the beach, but an acquaintance is and she took the photo that I used as my inspiration. I still have trouble knowing when to stop and am still learning watercolor technique, I think a pretty good effort.

I know this does not actually meet the criteria for the daily photo group, but I did take the photo today ;-) Happy Saturday everyone.

A Shot of Spring

Image
In the dead of winter. Yellow lily. I had to pull this from the archives as I stayed home from work today. I wouldn't say that I was playing hokey, but I wasn't sick ;-)

Russell County Historical Commission

Image
This sweet little house is the home of the Russell County Historical Commission. I tried to find some more information about it, but no luck. It's located on Broad Street next door to the county offices and looks down to the river.

G & H Art Supplies

Image
This is the shop where I purchase my paint supplies. For the artist, or the artist at heart, this is the place. Prices are competitive with the big box stores (Michaels and Hobby Lobby) and typically have a better selection.

Pizza Bar

Image
Waiting on line to order pizza for lunch at the TSYS campus cafeteria. They will be making pizzas to order all week long.

Headquarter Nissan

Image
I have my 2003 Murano at the shop today. As my car is 10 years old and I do not plan to buy a new vehicle for at least 5 years, I am having some preventive maintenance. In November I replaced the struts, shocks, and tires. In January I had to have some sensors replaced that were causing the RPMs to flutter. This month is belt replacement month. And next month we will replace a cracked motor mount. Most of the work is being completed at the Nissan dealership.

Dennis Hall's Central Barbershop

Image
On Crawford Road in Phenix City. Several buildings along this stretch of road are 'vintage'. For the most part it is lined with used car dealers and auto repair shops. I take this route to work every day so I don't really pay attention. On this day, which was sunny and cool, is across the street from the Valley Rescue Mission where we were dropping of a load of 'donatables'. Have a good weekend.

Stop Thinking About It! Try Us!

Image
This little restaurant has been open just over a year. I have not eaten there, because they mainly serve breakfast and lunch. This about the third restaurant in this location. Most go under after a year or two, because the location is hard to get too. This little place has been a donut shop, a soul food restaurant, and the Dairy Dream. I wish them luck and future success.

A Day Much Like Today

Image
**** This is what the skies looked like around here today; however the date stamp is 28 January 2007. I have not been able to get out and shoot because it has been raining CATS AND DOGS since yesterday. Today the river is raging, City Mills dam in the background is intact, and I took this shot from the 14th Street Bridge which has been closed for 18 months. The wheels of progress certainly do turn slowly. In fact, the river restoration project had not even started yet. Stay dry everyone.   *****

Patina

Image
***** I have mentioned before that Columbus is called the Fountain City, mainly for the large number of fountains in the median strip on Broadway. With the uptown development, older fountains were removed and replaced with the the fountain above. Same fountain in about 8 locations. Personally, I think they are a bit boring. I tried to find out what I could of the significance of the design with no luck. They are all turned off for the winter, however they are taking on an interesting patina which I like.  ***** And the buildings also have an interesting patina. We have painted brick, red brick and painted stucco and concrete fronts. The empty storefronts are just waiting for an industrious entrepreneur to move in and set up house keeping. If I was more adventerous and 20 years younger, I might consider starting a small business in this part of town myself. *****

Getting Creative

Image
Last week TOM built me a cabinet for my studio. Well, this weekend I put it to use. I started a journal page (trying to use the travel ephemera in a creative way) and painted a seascape watercolor using one of my photographs for inspiration. ***** ***** I painted the top of the cabinet with chalkboard paint. Do you have any idea how hard it it so find chalk these days? You can find plenty of dry erase markers, but I didn't buy dry erase paint, so ... ***** **** The cabinet has several size cubbys. I have a large cubby for a rolling cart for pens, paper, paint. I have some smaller cubbys for baskets and boxes for hidden storage. And finally, I have some vertical cubbys for storing frames, paint board, and large sheets of watercolor paper. The following shot is a 'before' of this space. Very cluttered with everything sitting on the floor. ***** ***** The following shot is the after. Everything in its place, ready to go. ***** *****

It's Miller Time

Image
***** Or maybe Blue Moon or Corona. Neon at one of the local watering holes, I mean restaurants. Well, I am off to get my weekend started. I have an organized 'studio' so now I better get over there and do some creating. ***** If you will allow for a bit of shameless self-promotion, I entered a shot into a contest for Caves Branch resort in Belize. If I get enough votes, I can win 3 nights all expenses paid...except for the airfare. So click on the link above, click the WIN button, and VOTE for a picture of TOM making a video of a baby howler monkey. Thanks for you support everybody. ***** *****

The BIG Jackhammer

Image
***** This is the big jackhammer that they are using to break up City Mills dam. When they are working, we can hear it in our office a 1/3 of a mile away. Thye sure made that dam to last that's for sure. You can see the depth of it. It is raining here today, but that's OK, because we need the moisture.

De-Constructing City Mills Dam

Image
Work on the dam is being completed as weather permits (read no rain). They use a big jack-hammer that just breaks it up. I assume that they will clean out some of the rock, but that is not their current focus.

Country's on Broad

Image
Looking north toward the TSYS corporate campus. I had some time to burn while I was waiting for my ride and the weather was nice so I decided to take of the opportunity. Now I have taken this shot countless times, but I really like the sign. Oh, well.

On our drive to work this morning

Image
This shot was taken this morning by TOM on his way to work.

Paint

Image
At the local home improvement center buying chalkboard paint. TOM has been cleaning and organizing the garage and he discovered 2 sheets of plywood...just what I needed for a storage/organizer in my 'studio' and I thought it would be cool to paint the top with chalk board paint.

I almost got off task when I saw the magnetic primer, because I also wanted a chalkboard in the kitchen and how cool would that be to also be magnetic? TOM was against the magnetic primer; not a fan of magnets. So we compromised and I had the chalkboard paint tinted 'fresco red'. The base of the  shelf will be a gray that we had left over from painting the living room.

Repair work on Dillingham

Image
Out with the old (and damaged) and in with the new. They have been doing some repair work on the Dillingham bridge.

Eagle and Phenix Water Tower

TGIF everyone.
