Eagle and Phenix Condos

Image
***** This shot was taken from the walk way to the island above the Heaven's Gate rapids. The bridge belongs to the EandP complex and is normally closed to the public. They have created a nice green space above the river that will be perfect for watching rafters, kayakers, and fireworks on the 4th of July. I am not sure if the green space will be open to the public, but I sure hope so. I would really hate to think that only the condo owners will get to take advantage of the view. They are currently working on buildings 2 and 3 of the complex. Building 1 (in the right of the frame) has been occupied for a couple of years now. You can see a bit of the riverwalk and the original stone retaining wall in the lower left corner of the shot. ***** We are heading to the Land of the Sky Blue Waters this weekend so I will be posting from the road and around my old stomping grounds for the next two weeks. TGIF everyone : ) *****

Red Cabbage

Image
***** Red cabbage in my garden. We ave never tried cabbage, so it will be interesting to see the result.  *****

Opening Day (2)

Image
***** 2-gun salute. The sequence of events got a bit out of order, but were corrected in short order. They had to stop the kayakers and rafters in order to shoot the guns. After that, it was pretty much a free for all. I am pretty sure these mini cannon were borrowed from Port Columbus, the local Civil War Naval Museum. As you can see, our gunners are wearing naval garb. *****

What a Waste

Image
***** I found this pike of foot-long loaves of bread in front of a Subway restaurant. I count at least 15 loaves in this bag. Instead of the putting this probably day old bread in the trash, why not donate it to the local food shelter. I eat day-old bread all the time. How about you? *****

My Three Veterans

Image
***** Today I want to remember to the veterans in my family. This first is my Dad. ***** ***** This is my husband. He was career military and retired in 1996 after 20 years of service. ***** ***** This is my father-in-law. He served as a tanker in Germany in WWII as always had stories to share about his experiences. We should have listened harder. *****

Rubber Kayak

Image
***** Running the Heaven's Gate rapids below E&P (the Georgia channel). The rapids on the Alabama channel are called Cut Bait and are the more intense of the two. ***** I want to try one of these rubber kayaks, but maybe I need to run the rapids in a regular raft first...to see what it is really like. The shots taken on 25 May 2013 are the end of a 2-year 'project' of documenting the restoration of the river. There are still a few unfinished projects, like the 14th Street Bridge and the entry point on the Georgia bank of the river. In a way, because the project is not 100%, it was a bit anti-climatic, but it is what it is. They will eventually finish the bridge and extend the river walk. ***** One of the two outfitters pulled out of the project at the last minute. So if you are interested in rafting the longest urban whitewater course, at 2.5 miles, contact Whitewater Express and make your reservation. They offer low water (morning) and high water (afternoon) runs. …

Fat Tire Ale

Image
***** I got some great shots at the river today, but I am having computer issues. The only shots I have are what I have on my phone, so here is a mural for Fat Tire Amber Ale. I have never tried this ale, but according to the website, "this ale has a toasty malt flavor, gently sweet with a flash of hops.  The malt and hops are perfectly balanced " This mural on a van caught my attention because of the subject matter and the painterly affect. *****

Sofa of Many Colors

Image
***** I ran to a local hobby store today and came across this cute little sofa. Kind of boho chic don't you think? And I liked the brightly colored throw pillows too.  ***** We're staying in town this weekend for the grand opening of the Chattahoochee Whitewater Park. The opening ceremonies are at 10:00. Dragon Boat racing starts at noon to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. Sounds like a few photo ops.  ***** If you're heading out on the highways this weekend, stay safe. If the roads in town today were any indication, it's gonna be crazy out there.  *****

I'll Take the Planters

***** At junking on Broadway. A new, I hope regular, part of market days.  *****

***** On a hot Saturday morning, a Columbus sharing a bottle of water with man's best friend.

Celebrity Sighting

Image
***** Last week at Market Days Tom ran into Ronald McDonald. He was in town for a 5k fun run to support the local Ronald McDonald house. If you are not familiar with the Ronald McDonald house, they provide housing for families of sick children. We had an opportunity to experience their hospitality in the mid 90's and they work hard to give families a safe and comfortable place to stay. One less thing to worry about. If your interested in donating time or money to worthy cause, you might consider supporting the Ronald McDonald house. I hope you don't suffer from caulrophobia!?!.

The Birds

Image
***** Today's interpretation of yesterdays's pink flamingo yard art. I rather like these colorful metal birds. Recently seen at Market Days in Uptown. *****

Ahwahnee Hotel - Yosemite

Image
***** I have not been out shooting because of my workload (and Thriller practice). You have to have your priorities straight you know, so I am taking a side trip today to Yosemite. We visited Yosemite in May 2009. A couple hours drive from SF and here you are. We did not stay at the Ahwahnee (a bit rich for our blood) and we preferred the "adventure" of the "cabins" in Curry Village. Maybe next time. ***** Yosemite gets more than 3.5 million visitors a year and the Ahwahnee is just one of the places for visitors to stay. The hotel opened in 1927 and was placed on the register of historic places in 1987. The Ahwahnee has 123 guest rooms. The rooms feature comfortable furnishings including upholstered chairs, televisions, refrigerators, bathrobes, hair dryers and bath amenities. Some rooms have king-size beds. Each room is accented with original Native American designs and is ideal for those guests who desire more service. (This from their website.) ***** We stayed in Cu…

Thriller, Thriller Night ...

Image
***** ... or was it day? Team Appreciation Week Character competition. We were pretty stoked going into the competition. We had rehearsed for a whole 2.5 hours, our make-up was in place but melting, and we were # 5 in the line up. Henry, in the red as Michael Jackson, is a very accomplished dancer and Denise was our choreographer. I must say, we rocked the house. Even in the 90 degree heat. *****   ***** We won a lunch for our entire department. Not sure when we're getting it, where we're getting it, or what it's going to be, or if it will be any good, but the experience and team building was seriously terrific. I was the oldest in the group and I kept up with those youngsters just fine. We are considering adding some moves and reprising our 'zombie roles' for the fall United Way talent competition. ***** ***** From left to right, front to back: Anita, Robert, Renarda, Chris, Henry, Denise Julie, Ausu, Ashley, Matt, Barb, Carrie  *****

Singing in Uptown

Image
***** Columbus has a pretty active music scene. Free concerts of local artists on Friday nights throughout the spring. You can also hear some good music during Market Days on Saturday mornings. It's a good way for young artists to get their music and their name out to the public. The Kress building in the background burned down 20 or so years ago. The only art of the structure that could be saved was the front facade. If you look thru the windows all you will see is a parking lot.

The Dukes of Hazzard

Image
Our company is celebrating 30 years this year and this is team appreciation week. We have an 1980's character contest tomorrow, but the executives got a head start today dressing up like characters from the "The Dukes of Hazzard" TV show from the 1980's.

We have from left to right: Boss Hogg (our CEO), Roscoe P Coltrane, Luke Duke, Bo Duke (our president), Uncle Jesse, and Daisy Duke. They are all standing in front of the General Lee. The show's theme song was sung by Waylon Jennings.

What's Wrong with this Thing

Image
***** Caught this young lady and her cell phone at Market Days. Not sure if she heard something she didn't like or if she was having a connection problem. Or maybe she received a text she didn't like. Regardless, she is making full use of modern technology and does not appear to be intimidated by it. *****

Timely Reflection

Image
***** Lamp post reflected in the clock in front of Lanes Jewelers. ***** I have had a heck of a Monday. Days like this is why Monday's have such a bad rap. I woke up feeling queasy, so I called out of work. My son had an appointment so I got ready to take him to town. (He does not drive.) I start up my car and there is this awful noise. It did the same thing on Saturday so I was half expecting it, but it was not as bad today. At this point, I can only hope that it is not my engine or transmission. The Murano is 10 years old with just 100,000 miles. I hoped to get many more before trading it in or buying a new one. ***** Anyway, I get my son to his appointment and while driving I contact the local dealership to see if I can get it in. I did not have my purse with me because I was planning on going for a photo walk, so I run home to get my purse; all the while hoping that I wasn't doing more damage or have a car accident. ***** Upon arrival, I get checked in and take the tech for a r…

***** Seen in uptown yesterday selling jewelry at Market Days on Broadway. Sending a Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out their. Have a great day. *****

A Feathered Affair

Image
****** A Silent Auction of bird houses to support Columbus Area Habitat. The birdhouses are decorated by area artists, local celebrities, and Habitat supporters. The last time this event was held was in 2002. This is just a few quick shots of the creative contributions. I placed a bid on the 'out of this world' birdhouse. Happy Saturday everyone. *****

I've Got My Eye on You

Image
***** We saved this guy from certain death last weekend. He was near the road and ready to cross. Rural Alabama roads are not safe for motorists, much less slow moving turtles. We returned him to the stream. This shot was taken with my new 50mm lens. I am still getting used to using it, but the shots out of camera are terrific. Nothing but a crop in this shot and a bit of exposure compensation. ***** From a search on google, I have determined that this is an Eastern Box Turtle. Box turtles are long lived, are slow to mature, and slow crawlers. Turtle hunting has been banned in Alabama in case your interested. TGIF *****

Decisions, Decisions

Image
***** Discussing their bait options? Real vs rubber worms? We'll never know. Creating memories of childhood. You betcha'! Stay out of the water though or the tie snake might get you... *****

Rushing Water and Wildflowers

Image
***** At Moffits Mill in Salem, Alabama. I am pretty sure that an old grist mill once stood on this spot. You can see a bit of the foundation in the left of the frame. We spent some time exploring last Saturday. This spot is a popular swimming spot during the sweltering southern summers. We may have to check it out this summer. Stay tuned. *****

Firetruck

Image
***** Looks like they need to get this fire truck into the shop. Lost a front wheel and could use a paint job. Saw this mailbox a week ago, but pulled over to take a shot on our way back from Moffits Mill, but more on that later this week. *****

The Sputnik Bar

Image
***** Sitting here listening to 50's and 60's blues and rock-n-roll, puts me in the mood for monochrome photos of old bars and rainy streets. I am guessing this pool hall was born in the 50's or 60's while the US was in the middle of the space race with Russia. Sputnik being the first artificail satelite was  launched by the USSR in 1957. I did find a signature on the ghost signs which indicates they were repainted in 2001.   *****  ***** I really liked this sign. It reads "Welcome to the Sputnik. Now Buy a Damn Beer". It is listed in the restaurant review for Columbus, but I am pretty sure they don't serve food here. I would also guess that most of their customers arrive on foot, because you never see many cars here. However, I am never downtown after dark...it's my bedtime you know. *****  ***** We walked around the back on our way back to the car and found the back door open. Unformately the cool beer light was blocked, but I like the way the li…

St John AME Church

Image
***** The corner stone for this church was placed in 1870. In 1890, they decided to add a basement to the building suggesting that the original wooden structure was raised and bricked in. The congregation was forced to move to a new location when this structure was severely damaged  by a tornato. The church was purchased by the Faith Tabernacle Full Gospel Outreach in 1993 with the intent of restoring the structure. The church is now available for rent. ***** It was a rainy day in the valley with gray skies. I got a bit wet, as did Tom, on this outing. *****

Samford Hall

Image
***** Over the last couple of Saturday's I have been posting some of the 'haunted' buildings in Auburn and Opelika. This is Samford Hall on the Auburn University Campus. Back in the day, the school was chartered as the East Alabama Men's College. That was 1856. Five years later the Civil War begins. The building (this is not the original structure) is converted into the Texas Hospital. When soldiers passed, the bodies were stacked twenty-five feet across and six feet high. Many of these soldiers were interred in Pine Hill Cemetery and Baptist Rosemere Cemetery. ***** The original structure burned down in 1887 and was replaced by what is now Samford Hall. The most prominent ghost resides in the bell tower. During the war, a soldier, often wounded, stood guard in the bell tower and watched over the hospital and grounds. It is believed that a ghost of one of the wounded guards still stands his post in the bell tower with his rifle on his shoulder. ***** Excerpted from &…

Signs in Uptown

Image
**** They have these signs all around uptown. I guess they want to make sure you can get to your destination. The items hanging from this sign are highly regarded in Columbus. I imagine that pretty soon we will have a directional arrow to the Chattahoochee Whitewater course. I will have to keep my eyes open. TGIF! *****

Waterfall

Image
***** Waterfall in a small park in Phenix City. Long time residents don't even know it's here. As I mentioned yesterday, they have cleaned up alot of the brush and it is much easier to see now. I am pleased with the output. I got 7 prime shots. *****

The Red Valve

Image
***** A co-worker asked me to go take a photo of a waterfall where her grandmother likes to go walking. So my assignment after work today was to go and get some shots for her to look at. I have been down here before, but they have really cleaned the area up. I did not see this valve the last time I was here. *****
