Sunset on 2013

Image
***** We are not big party people-at least not anymore, so we are home this evening. It was a laid back Tuesday with nothing on the agenda but a movie: The Desolation of Smaug. If I had one critique of this movie, it would be that they turned a single book, The Hobbit, into three [very long] movies. That should be against the rules...one book, one movie. The movie aside, I wish a safe new year holiday and a happy new year.  *****

Tin Cans

Image
***** Mexican tin art in front of the Cantina in Uptown. I like the flamingo, but that frog plays a mean trumpet! *****

Angel Heart

Image
***** A bit of graffiti on remnants of the Eagle and Phenix dam. Two years ago a torrent of water would have been rushing over the top, now it is dry as a bone. This is on the Alabama side of the river.  *****

A Big Stick

Image
***** Sometimes you need to carry a big stick. TGIF.  *****

Bibb City Mill

Image
***** We tried to locate a couple of geocaches today. We found the first one, but the one below the Rivermill Event center and the Bibb City water tower has us stumped. We will have to go back for a second look. It was nice to get out of the house tho. The temperature was a 'balmy' 50 degrees :-). Perfect for a treasure hunt.  *****

Watery Reflections

Image
***** Took a short stroll down by the river today. It was a bit on the cool side with a slight breeze. The water is high from the recent rains.  *****

Christmas Lights

Image
***** This yard was spectacular. Wish I could show it all to you. This part will have to do. Below is a short clip from the Ludy display.  Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  *****

The River after Rain

Image
***** We had rain for a solid 24 hours; finally stopping this morning. It is still pretty grey outside and the temperatures are starting to drop, but we won't get as cold as other parts of the country. At least I hope not. We plan to look at some of the Christmas lights tonight, so maybe I can share some holiday lights tomorrow. Stay warm and dry.  *****

Big Dog Running Company

Image
***** Because they care about your dogs. If you're looking for shoes, they have a wide selection of name brands and they will make sure they fit right. You can check out their website here: http://www.bigdogrunning.com/plaintext/home/home.aspx.

Iron Bank Coffee

Image
***** Located in, where else, the old Iron Bank building. I have not had a coffee here, or anything else for that matter, but I hear they serve a pretty mean panini (and I liked their banners on the column). They also serve up live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. Follow this link to their website: http://www.ironbankcoffee.com/

Santa and Friend

Image
***** Santa and friend in the window of a jewelry store in Uptown that specializes in antique and vintage jewelry. The only way the reflection could have been better is if I had taken this shot at night with the Christmas lights. Maybe I will have to go back and try again. TGIF.  *****

Phoenix 2008

By Jon Lumpkin Steel and bronze  ***** Follow this link to view the complete sculpture and read about the artist.

Christmas Shopping at Outside World

Image
***** I always get a kick out of the sign at Outside World. They have hats and mittens, but what about insulated gear needed  for winter rafting? I am pretty sure the river is getting colder every day.  *****

Tuesday Morning

Image
***** The streets were quiet this morning. It's not too often anymore that you don't see people on the sidewalks and the hustle and bustle of activity. I guess it helped that nothing was open yet, except for a couple of coffee shops. The sidewalks are so congested these days, the city had to put up signs to remind us that sidewalks are for pedestrians, not bicycles and skateboards.  *****

Mark's City Grill

Image
***** New billboard advertising Mark's City Grill in north Columbus. Mark owns several restaurants in the area. His food is popular. One of his busiest restaurants is Hunter's Pub which I have shown you here.

Untitled

Image
***** On my way to work this morning.  *****

The Big Dig

Image
***** No, this is not Boston, but the TSYS campus. Renovations on the Mott House are under way...and I mean way under. I am assuming that they needed to upgrade the systems for the sewer and other utilities. Work is also going on inside, but I am pretty sure I will not be able to get a shot of that.  *****

Cannon Brew Pub

Image
***** The 'Cannon' was one of the first restaurants in Uptown in the late 90's that wasn't part of a chain. My son's high school shop teacher and a friend had an idea to brew (on the premises) micro beers and expand the beer drinking tastes of the local rednecks.  ***** The original restaurant/bar was two store fronts. Restaurant on one side ( through the arch on the left) and the bar on the other. Both of my sons worked here at one time or another. My oldest son also helped rehab the building. He actually helped dig out the basement and they found numerous Civil War relics during excavation.  ***** The Cannon is doing well these days; they have expanded into the space next door. The original owners were bought out years ago. I hope they made a good deal.  *****

Candyland Gingerbread House

Image
***** Over the last couple of weeks I have been planning and creating decorations for a cube decorating contest at work. I haven't participated the last couple of years, but this year I went all out. My theme was Candyland (like the game). The wreath is made from marshmallows and gumdrops.  Boy was that a sticky job because it has been really humid over the last week. I bought the gingerbread man; however I made GBM game pieces.  ***** Here is a short video of the three separate areas.

Hand-Painted Christmas Cards

Image
***** I feel like I need to post something. Because of recent injuries, and the lack of photographic inspiration, I have been pouring all my creativity into other pursuits. I have been creating elements for a cube decorating contest at work, preparing to be a secret Santa, and painting Christmas cards. I have been having a lot of fun, but it doesn't leave much time for a city daily photo! I hope to get back into the swing of things soon. *****
