I grew up in Minnesota, but I never could figure out ice skating. I had/have 'weak' ankles. I preferred my roller skates. TOM on the other hand was ice skating and hockey all the way. Ice skating came to Columbus about the same time that the Cottonmouths Hockey team did (10 years ago or so) and it has been growing in popularity ever since. You can buy an annual pass for $300 (one person) or pay as you go $7. Maybe I should give it another try. What do you think?

Lottie Autry (1/9/36 - 6/10/97) - The Linwood Lady

Author and historian. She was a noted genealogist and author of "Linwood Cemetery" and several other books of Georgia and Alabama local histories. She was the first uniformed female law enforcement officer in Columbus,Ga and served in all three branches: Marshals Office, Sheriffs Office, and the Police Department.

The Historic Linwood Foundation presents their annual award, the "Dolores Autry Award", to the person who has contributed most each year to the Linwood Cemetery's benefit and legacy .

When your sons work in the restaurant industry, you tend to try out the restaurants where they work. My oldest son started working at City Grill right before the holidays, but to tell you the truth I had never heard of it till he got the job. Then I started asking around and no one had anything bad to say about the food. They serve food made using family recipes, but on this day I was interested in the Pimento Cheese Burger with Jalapeno Jelly and Bacon. I know, it sounds like a heart attack on a plate, but I asked for a kiddie portion and had grilled squash as my side. Both were delicious. Oh, and the cornbread was pretty damn good too (my son brought me a sample, one of the perks). I took a shot of my food, but I don't like to use flash in restaurants and it didn't turn our to well. Just an FYI, the place looks pretty empty right now (we arrived early for dinner) but all the tables were full by the time we left. If I were into ratings, I would have to give this restaurant 5 Cornbread Muffins. Good Eatin' Ya'll.

This sign popped up near the 14th Street bridge last fall. I took a shot of it then, but never got back to it. Yesterday there was a bike chained to it so I figured I better capture another shot. Apparently, this is the beginning (or the end depending on your perspective) of the Fall Line Trace trail in Columbus. The trail follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way of the Norfolk and Southern. The trail runs for 11 miles to Midland, GA. The trail is asphalt and concrete and is approved for skates, skateboards, bikes, pedestrians, and wheelchairs. I may have to 'take an urban hike'.

Infantry Chapel

Yesterday I explained the tradition of the arch of swords. Today I show you the Infantry Chapel on the main post of Fort Benning. The chapel was dedicated to four chaplains who, during WWII, gave their life preservers to others while their ship sank. The chapel is still decorated for the holidays, but the red and green are quite striking. As you can see, they did not waste any time cleaning up after us. Must have been another wedding that day.

Military Wedding Tradition

The arch of swords takes place immediately following the ceremony, preferably when the couple leaves the chapel or church, on the steps or walk. Since a church is a sanctuary, in case of bad weather, and with permission, the arch may be formed inside the chapel or church. Also, with permission, you may be allowed to have two arch of sabers, one in the church and one outside.

If an arch is held inside and the ushers are commissioned officers, they line up with the bridal party at the altar. After the blessing, the bride and groom turn, face the guests and remain there while the saber bearers get into position.

The senior saber bearer issues a quiet cue, and all saber bearers turn, proceed to the center aisle in pairs, facing the guests, and stop at a point just forward from the first pew line. With the command "Center Face" they pivot so that the officers are in two lines facing each other. At the "Arch Sabers" command, the saber is raised with the right hand until it touches the tip of the saber directly opposite. The cutting edge is up.

We went up to the roof on Friday to watch the demolition team blast some rock below the P&E dam for the river restoration project. We were warned that the 'explosion' might rattle the windows of the building and we would hear the 'boom'. Being a block away, the top level of our parking deck would a prime viewing location. The 'blast' was scheduled for 2:30.

At 2:45 we were still waiting. During the wait, I shot a few snaps of Columbus' skyline.

At 2:50, the police finally stopped traffic on the 13th Street bridge and we prepared for the 'boom'.

We have a new sandwich shop in town. LeMo's Grill. A friend from work and I went and checked them out for lunch and found it to be a friendly little place. Lee, our proprietor, specials in Chicago-style sandwiches and pizzas. However, I was in the mood for some Turkey Chili (with cheese and raw onions). Prices are reasonable and the food was good. You can't ask for much more than that. We didn't have any dessert, but that gives us a good excuse for back for another visit.

While we were in Minnesota, we celebrated life with my grandma who turned 92 on the Dec 20. She has always full of life and enjoys a glass of wine. A couple of years ago she tripped while line dancing (those orthopedic shoes will get you every time) and broke her hip. My mother was quite worried about her because all the fun seemed to go out of her, but as you can see, she is back to her happy self.

On our recent flight to Minnesota an interesting thing happened...we arrived at MSP about 20 minutes early. I tell you, I was dumbfounded. We had to sit on the taxi-way until the gate was cleared watching the Delta flights heading for destinations unknown.

One thing that always amazes me is that you cannot just pull into another gate if they are empty. At the Humphrey terminal, they have about 4 or 5 gates. They were all empty, except the one we were supposed to use to deplane. So instead we wait.

City Mills dam will be removed along with the E&P dam as part of the river restoration project, but the work will not start (mid to end of 2012) until they finish with P&E. They are however, working on the extension of the Phenix City river walk, which is what I am standing on to take this shot. They have not added the railing yet so it feels like you are right on top of the water. The flow here is still full strength and the water roared. I have taken shot of City Mills and the dam, but always from the Georgia side looking east.

The company I work for is a Partner in Education with Downtown Elementary. Departments within the company 'adopt' classes. A lot of the students come from financially challenged homes. We help with parties, buy them Christmas gifts, read to the students, mentor and tutor, and help whenever we can. Our department adopted a 3rd grade class this year and in return they made us these cards for Thanksgiving. I think they are great. How about you?

The work on the dam has been halted until they fix the river walk. As you can see a lot of water is flowing thru the spillway and covering up the temporary construction road. They hope to resume work on the dam by next week.

First Casualty

The first casualty of the river restoration project occurred on Saturday, 5 November. The force of the water being diverted for the dam work through the powerhouse caused a 48 foot section of the river walk on the Columbus-side of the river to collapse. I took this shot on Saturday, but didn't realize what I had till Sunday. Luckily, the contractor noticed something was wrong on Friday and put up some barricades. This particular section is very popular with the local fisherman and someone could have been injured or worse.

They are working hard to get the river walk repaired by Saturday, 12 November because the Soldier Marathon is being held that day and this is part of the route. The pressure is on because this race is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

The Morning After

A piece of Columbus history burned down last night. Swift Denim closed down this manufacturing plant in and sold the building in 2006 when they moved to a new and improved plant. The building has been empty since closing although there were plans to repurpose the structure. There were no reports of injuries or damage to surrounding buildings.

The sidewalk was the police line and we were not able to get any closer. And I forgot the BIG lens at home. This Daily blogger was interviewed by the local TV station and may be on the local news tonight.

However, I forgot to mention the name of my blog...duh. My only defense is related to the time change. It threw me off. Here is a link to a shot of this section of the building taken a year ago.

A short history of the mill (from the Ledger article reference below).

Organized in 1883 by William A. Swift and G. Mote Williams, the mill was the first large steam-driven textile plant in the city. Over time it developed into an even larger complex as Swift Manufacturing made major additions in 1896, 1918 and 1925-1928, according to research by historian John Lupold. The mill built new warehouses and continued to update its facilities through the 1970s.

After local investors sold the mill in 1962, it operated under series of different owners. Over the years it repeatedly shifted its product lines, producing bed spreads, open mesh, automobile seat covers and industrial fabrics.

More recently the mill produced denim yarn, part of a process by which Swift furnished material to blue jeans makers such as J.C. Penney and Levis.

Swift Denim closed its operations in 2006 and sold the building to a company in North Carolina. The mill, which had nearly 80,000 square feet, previously was damaged by fires in June 2008 and in March 2009.

I went to Jason's Deli today for lunch with a co-worker. I was a little surprised to see so many empty tables because they have great soup, sandwiches, and salad bar. They also have a fruit dip that is to die for. If you ever get an opportunity, you need to check them out.

Right after I snapped this shot, it started to rain. Isn't that always the way it goes. You wash your car, it rains. You water the lawn, it rains. You go camping (in a tent), and it rains.

I was impressed by the fact that they used a board on the inside to keep the cars from getting wet. You can see it right under the lift.

It was a nice day for paddle, although a bit on the cool side. We had some head winds also that made it a little more challenging. We were trying to make it to the dam, but we ended up turning back. We will have to try again tomorrow.

Chattahoochee River...Sandbar

It doesn't take long for nature to start taking over. I was down at the river today...actually in the river walking out on the sandbars, bit of a strange experience. Wildflowers, soft green mosses, and other grasses are growing in the absence of the flowing Chattahoochee River.

Next time I go down there, I will have to take a goodie bag. I found several interesting glass shards, old pottery, even a fishing lure. My pockets were so heavy, I started to lose my drawers : )

Caught this at the Ossahatchee Pow Wow last weekend. I think I was looking a the blue/purple hair and the orange hat, but after I really looked at the shot I realized that there was also a black and white check, red and white hats in the frame. Interestingly, almost everyone in the background is also hatless. For the record, I had a hat on my head. It was heading (no pun intended) for the 80's and I forgot my sunblock.

Arts on the River! is a cultural arts festival held each October in various locations near the Columbus

Riverwalk overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The festival evolved from the Columbus Artists’ Guild’s Fall Arts Festival, held for many years in various locations around town.

The art show is juried, in that representative work of all participating artists is reviewed to assure that the show remains fine arts only. Slides or photographs are required from first time exhibitors. The awards for the fine arts show have attracted the attention of artists throughout the southeast. A judge from outside the area is brought in to disperse the honors. Various media are encouraged and the show now accepts original computer art and fine art jewelry as well as the traditional forms of presentation. The result is a unique collection of paint media, photography, metal work, glass, hand thrown pottery, sculpture, and wood carving. Artists are encouraged to demonstrate their expertise during the show, and talk to interested persons, especially children.
